Engineers jump back into USILA Division III National Top 20 Poll

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team is ranked 17th in the nation, according to the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III Top 20. This is the second appearance in the poll this season by the Engineers, who debuted 19th in the preseason.
 
Under the direction of 17th-year head coach Jim Townsend, the Engineers enter its third week of the season with a 2-0 record.  RPI is coming off a 10-9 home victory over Keene State last Saturday, and previously beat Montclair State by a 10-4 margin on Feb. 25.
 
Individually, the Engineers are led by senior attack Andrew Miller (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), who is first on the team in scoring with four goals and three assists for seven points.  He also has a team-high 14 shots, including 10 on goal, with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
Juniors Eric Valero (Princeton Jct., NJ/W. Windsor Plainsboro) and Brett Overend (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) round out the top three offensively with six points apiece.  Valero has a squad-best six goals, while Overend had added four goals and two assists.
 
In the midfield, faceoff specialist Brian Larkin (Florham Park, NJ/Seton Hall Prep.) continues to dominate, boasting a 65.8% (25-38) in the circle and a team-high 17 ground balls, while defensively, senior Scott Stolzenber (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) leads the squad with four caused turnovers and is second behind Larkin with eight ground balls.
 
Junior James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) paced the team in goal, owning a 2-0 record, with a 6.50 goals against average and a .618 save percentage. Playing in all 120:00 minutes, he has stopped 21 shots while allowing just 13 goals.
 
Salisbury, which is 5-0, is currently first in the poll, is followed by Tufts (0-0) and Cortland State (2-0). Stevenson (3-0) and Amherst (0-0) round out the top five.  Rensselaer is one of three Liberty League teams currently in the top 20, along with RIT (1-0) at #6 and Union (0-1) at #11.
