CLAREMONT, Calif. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Stephen Silber has wrapped up his sophomore season, finishing 13th overall in the high jump at the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. It was Silber's first-ever appearance at Nationals, which are being held at Burns Stadium on the campus of Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Claremont, Calif.

Silber posted a mark of 2.03 meters in the event, which featured 18 participants.  Though he had several solid attempts at 2.06 meters – which would have tied the current RPI school record – he could not make the final clear to continue on in the competition.  He was one of two competitors from the Liberty League, along with RIT's Jamie Dorren, who finished 17th overall.

Trevor James from Carthage won the event with a mark of 2.09 meters.  He beat out several others in terms of fewest missed jumps, including Wartburg's Jonas Elusme, who won the 2011 national title with a jump of 2.09 meters.

A sophomore from Blossvale, N.Y., Silber competed in eight meets this season, posting second or better in five of the seven performances at high jump.  A Liberty League Field Performer of the Week selection once, he claimed victory in the event four times.

Several of his top performances this season came at the Liberty League Championships and the NYSCTC Championships.  At the conference meet, Silber claimed victory in the high jump for the second straight season as the Engineers won their fourth straight championship title.  He also placed third in the 4x100 relay and fourth in the 200m-dash.

Silber then repeated those results at the State Championships, garnering his second straight high jump title at the NYSCTC meet.  He also placed seventh in the long jump event.

Through two seasons, the Mount Anthony Union High School graduate has earned six titles.   Three of those have come this season as the dual champion at outdoor Liberty League and State Meets, while the other was during the indoor campaign at States.  Silber was the Liberty League Rookie of the Year in both the indoor and outdoor campaigns a season ago, while also being named the NYSCTC Indoor Rookie of the Meet in 2011.
