TROY, N.Y. – Five players reached double-figures as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team downed RIT, 105-86, this evening in Liberty League action from East Campus Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-5 overall (2-1 Liberty), while the Tigers drop to 4-8 (0-3 Liberty).
Senior captain
Brendan Farley (Burlington, MA/Burlington) led the way offensively for the home side, scoring 22 points on 8 of 15 shooting from the floor. Classmate and fellow captain
Daniel Martin (Cohasset, MA/Cohasset) dropped in 15 points, to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.
Rensselaer forced 16 of RIT's 27 turnovers in the second half, in order to expand on a 49-39 halftime advantage. Freshman
Tyler Gendron (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) has a strong opening stanza, pouring in 12 of his 14 points in just 11 minutes. Tigers' senior Nick Dobson (Corning, NY/Corning West) and freshman J.P. Reagan (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each had 11 in the first half.
The Engineers opened the second half with a 17-7 run to take a 66-46 lead, less than four minutes in. Baskets from junior Casey Bobelis (Brandenton, FL/Brader River) and Dobson brought the visitors to within 16 (66-50) five minutes into the stanza.

Erik Hatton (Atkinson, NH/Timberlane Regional), including a three-pointer with 14:07 to play, extended the lead back to 21.
Rensselaer then continued to build on its lead, which ballooned to 27 (84-57) at the midway point of the half after a lay-up and a converted three-point play from Martin. Junior
Reggie Colas (Miami, FL/Belen Jesuit) kept the hosts up 27 (89-62) with a triple a minute and a half later.
RIT was unable to climb and closer than 17 points down the stretch as the Engineers were able to hit 15 of 39 threes (38.5%) in the contest. Farley hit on 5 of 10 from beyond the arc, while Gendron was 3 for 5. Colas and Hatton both reached double-figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Pacing the Tigers was junior Jameel Balenton (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers), who recorded a team-high 16 points. Dobson added 15, while Reagan chipped in with 14.
RPI improves to 9-1 when scoring over 100 points since the start of the 2011-12 season.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they visit Liberty League and area-rival Union College (4pm).
