Sarah Wetmore made a three-point basket at the buzzer to break a tie and cap a 66-63 come-from-behind win over Union in a Liberty League women's basketball game. RPI improves to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen, who led the entire game, fall to 8-5 and 4-2.
Wetmore's game-winning basket gave the Engineers their only lead of the game as they trailed 3-0 to start the game and by as many as nine points with only 3:38 left in the second half.
Union led 37-28 at halftime thanks in large part to 14 points on 7 of 11 shooting from Kate Thompson. The sophomore forward also had four rebounds and two steals. As a team, the Dutchwomen shot 47% (17 of 36), while holding the Engineers to just 30% (11 of 37).
Union jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the game before RPI cut it to a four-point deficit, 20-16 midway through the first half. The Dutchwomen went on an 11-0 run to take a 15-point lead (31-16), but RPI battled to within six points (33-27) with just under three minutes remaining. Sophomore
Courtney Reynolds hit her second three pointer of the half at the 2:53 mark and freshman
Ashley Clough scored on a layup to make it a 33-27 deficit and forcing Union to call a timeout. Union scored four of the final five points of the half for its nine-point bulge at the break.
Reynolds finished with eight first half points, while Clough had six points and six rebounds.
The second half was much like the first in that Union held the lead throughout. The Engineers cut their deficit to four points with 7:47 to go, but the Dutchwomen fought back for a nine-point (62-53) edge four minutes later. Rensselaer outscored Union 13-1 from that point on with Clough making it a two-point game, 63-61, with 1:18 to go and then Wetmore tying it with two free throws with 26 seconds remaining.
Rensselaer's leading scorer this season, Wetmore scored 20 of her game-high 22 points in the second half. She also had 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal. Clough finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Thompson led Union with 20 points on 10 of 21 shooting. She also had 11 rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Brittney Kenney added 18 points with seven rebounds and Amy Loya led all players with 12 rebounds.
Union finished by making 39% of its shots (26 of 67) with a 49-45 edge in rebounds. RPI shot 32% (23 of 73).
Rensselaer plays at league foe Vassar College on Tuesday night (6pm). Union also returns to the court on Tuesday when it hosts The Sage Colleges in a non-league game (7pm).
