TROY, N.Y. – Freshman netminder
Jason Kasdorf made 34 saves to help secure a 3-2 victory for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team over 16th-ranked Cornell University. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-10-5 overall (3-6-3 ECAC Hockey), while the Big Red drops to 8-7-2 (4-4-2 ECAC Hockey).
The victory gives the Engineers their first sweep of a Colgate/Cornell home weekend since February 26 and 27, 1999.
Rensselaer scored first for the second straight night as senior defenseman
Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) buried a one-timer right in front of the Big Red cage. Sophomore
Jacob Laliberte (Rockland, ON/Cornwall Colts) feed the puck across the low slot to Bailen who notched his fifth goal of the season. The marker, which came on the power-play, was also assisted by sophomore
Matt Neal (Minesing, ON/Stoufville Spirit).
Sophomore John McCarron (Macomb, MI/Lincoln Stars) answered for the Big Red at 10:12 of stanza as the visitors capitalized on man-advantage opportunity of their own. Assists on the equalizing goal went to junior Justin Mowrey (Burnaby, BC/Victoria Grizzlies) and sophomore Joakim Ryan (Rumson, NJ/Dubuque Fighting Saints).
Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Buccaneers) made 15 of his 34 saves in the first period, including a number of stops during a five-minute major penalty.
The Engineers regained the lead (2-1) at 15:27 of the second period when sophomore
Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Development Team) slammed in a one-timer off a pass from Neal. Junior
Guy Leboeuf (West Palm Beach, FL/Cornwall Colts) earned the second helper on Haggerty's ninth of the year.

Mark McGowan then netted the eventual game-winner (3-1) at 12:14 of the third period. Freshman defenseman
Chris Bradley (Williamsville, NY/Youngstown Phantoms) moved the puck through the neutral zone for Haggerty, who found McGowan streaking up the left wing. McGowan roofed a shot over the left should of Cornell junior goaltender Andy Iles (Ithaca, NY/US National Development Team) for his fourth of the season.
Cornell was able to draw within 3-2 with 30.4 seconds left in the regulation after pulling Iles for an extra attacker. Sophomore Joel Lowry (Calgary, AB/Victoria Grizzlies) stuffed the puck in from close range.
Kasdorf (4-1-2) stopped 10 shots in the second period and nine in the third, while Iles finished with 22 saves, including 14 in the second stanza.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday night, when they take on 17th-ranked Union College at the Times Union Center for a non-conference game (7:30pm).
