Women's Basketball Bests Bard in League Game

TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team went on a 24-2 run early in the first half and the Engineers never looked back in defeating Bard College, 68-35, in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. The Engineers improve to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the league, while the Raptors fall to 7-10 and 1-7.

The two teams were tied 4-4 four minutes into the game when RPI broke out by scoring 24 of the next 26 points in a 7:13 span. Graduate student Sarah Wetmore (Sudbury, MA / Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) scored eight of the points for the Engineers, who got five each from sophomore Michelle Reid (Derry, NH / Pinkerton Academy) and freshman Ashley Clough (West Chesterfield, NH / Keene).  Rensselaer eventually built its advantage to 33 points, leading 45-12 at halftime.

Wetmore had 14 first half points and finished with 16 in the contest. She also had seven rebounds, two steals, two blocks and an assist. Clough had 10 points with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Eight others recorded points for the Engineers, who shot 53.1percent from the field in the first half and 44,4% overall. RPI held a 54-35 edge in rebounding.

For Bard, Tytravia Riley (Miami, FL / Gulliver Prep.) led her team with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. The freshman forward came into the game averaging the most rebounds in Division III with 16.1 per contest. Senior Imani Jones (Brooklyn, NY / Fiorello LaGuardia) added eight points and six rebounds.

The Engineers travel to league foe Skidmore College on Friday. Bard plays at William Smith College on Friday in a league matchup. Both games begin at 6pm.
