SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's basketball team won its sixth straight, an 81-74 Liberty League battle over Rensselaer, Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.
The Thoroughbreds are tied for second in the Liberty League with a 7-2 league and 13-5 overall record. The Engineers are 4-3 and 9-7.
Skidmore freshman Aldin Medunjanin went 12-12 from the free throw line on the way to 19 points to go along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Classmate Tanner Brooks dropped 14 points and Connor Merrill added 15 pointsand five rebounds. Eli Johnston has eight points and eight rebounds.
Jamie Zajac was the lone RPI player in double figures with a game-high 20 points.
Daniel Martin had seven points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, while
Nick Keefe had seven assists and seven points.
The Engineers started the game with an early 15-11 lead with 13:15 to play in the first half. Skidmore scored the next three field goals to go up 17-15 and never trail the rest of the game.
RPI kept it close until Skidmore used 9-0 run to open a 74-61 lead with 4:28 to play. The Engineers wouldn't go easily, using a 13-4 run over their own to get to within four 78-74 with 1:29 to play. Zajac had seven of the 13 points.
RPI went 0-5 over the final 1:29, while Medunjanin hit a pair of free throws and Johnston made one free throw for the 81-74 final.
Skidmore hosts Union in The Big Green Scream on Saturday at 4 p.m., while RPI is home against St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. The Engineers' game can be seen live on www.rpitv.org.
