Women's Basketball Tops Clarkson, 58-51

Engineers force 27 turnovers to earn first league victory

TROY, N.Y. – Graduate student Sarah Wetmore scored a team-high 19 points to pace the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team to a, 58-51, victory over Clarkson University, this afternoon at East Campus Arena. With the win the Engineers improve to 7-4 (1-1 Liberty League), while the Golden Knights drop to 2-8 (0-2 Liberty League).

An evenly played first 20 minutes saw the hosts take a one-point lead (27-26) into halftime. Clarkson limited the Engineers to 31.4% shooting in the opening stanza to keep it close. Wetmore (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury Regional) scored eight points in the stanza, going 3 for 10 from the floor.

Back-to-back baskets early in the second half by sophomore Bailei Tetrault (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) and Wetmore gave the hosts a five-point lead (35-30) 6:50 into the period. Sophomore Michelle Reid (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) then scored on the fast-break off of a steal by classmate Courtney Reynolds (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo) to give RPI a 37-30 advantage with 11:45 to play.

After Clarkson pulled to within five (37-32), the Engineers went on a 6-0 run to regain a double-digit lead (43-32) with 9:04 remaining.

Clarkson freshman, who netted a game-high 26 points, to go along with a game-high 18 rebounds, brought the visitors to within six (54-48) with a pair of free throws with a minute and a half left.

Tetrault and junior captain Kelly Piotrowski (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) both went 2 for 2 from the line down the stretch to seal the victory. Piotrowski finished with 11 points and five rebounds, while Tetrault had nine points.

Golden Knights' freshman forward Isabella Esposito (Essex, VT/Essex) had eight points and seven boards.

The Engineers return to action on Friday, when they host RIT (6pm).
