BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Junior Ryan Haggerty scored two goals and sophomore Jason Kasdorf stopped all 13 shots he faced to lead the 15th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 6-0 victory over Sacred Heart University, this afternoon at Webster Bank Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Pioneers drop to 1-1.

Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Development Team) took a feed from behind the net by senior captain Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys) and buried a shot past Sacred Heart junior goaltender Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, SA) for his first of the season at 16:34 of the opening frame.

After not scoring again for the remainder of the first period, the Engineers found the back of the net three times in the second to open up the game. Senior Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) made it 2-0 at 4:31, before Haggerty score his second of the contest, on the power-play, at 9:20. Sophomore Mike Zalewski (New Hartford, NY/Vernon Vipers) made it 4-0 after nifty passing from Higgs and classmate Milos Bubela (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Dubuque Fighting Saints) set him up.

Rensselaer added a pair of insurance goals in the third period, including a short-handed tally by Tinordi with just over three minutes to play.

Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Buccaneers) was forced to just make 13 saves in the game, while Bodnarchuk finished with 26 stops.

The Engineers are back on the ice tomorrow afternoon, when they visit fourth-ranked Boston College (3pm). The game can be heard live on 91.5 FM, WRPI and online at www.wrpi.org/listen.
