CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Six players recorded multiple points as the fourth-ranked Boston College men's hockey team defeated 15th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 7-2, this afternoon, in non-league action from Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Engineers drop to 1-1.

Boston College scored first, when senior Kevin Hayes (Dorchester, MA/Noble and Greenough) took a feed from junior Johnny Gaudreau (Carneys Point, NJ/Dubuque) and beat RPI sophomore netminder Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Buccaneers) at 2:03 of the first period. Freshman defenseman Scott Savage (San Clemente, CA/U.S. U-18 Team) picked up the second assist on the power-play goal.

Sophomore Milos Bubela (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Dubuque Fighting Saints) pulled the visitors even at 17:05 of the frame, when he wristed home a rebound off a shot by senior captain Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys). Sophomore Mike Zalewski (New Hartford, NY/Vernon Vipers) earned the second helper on the tying goal.

The Eagles then scored two goals in quick succession early in the second stanza. Gaudreau gave the hosts the lead for good at 6:24, before junior Quinn Smith (Fairfield, CT/Avon Old Farms) made it a 3-1 game, just 13 seconds later.

RPI freshman Jimmy DeVito (Bloomingdale, IL/Lincoln Stars) netted his first collegiate goal after jumping on a loose puck in the neutral zone and flying in a breakaway. He faked to the right before moving the puck to his backhand for the tally. The goal came at 11:02 of the second.

BC freshman Ryan Fitzgerald (North Reading, MA/Valley) answered at 15:29 of the frame, jamming home a pass from classmate Austin Cangelosi (Estero, FL/Youngstown) to give the hosts a 4-2 lead after two.

The Eagles then tacked on three more goals in the third, including one by senior Bill Arnold (Needham, MA/U.S. U-18 Team), just 18 seconds in. Freshmen Chris Calnan (Norwell, MA/South Shore) and Steve Santini (Mahopac, NY/U.S. U-18 Team) each netted their first collegiate goals at 3:04 and 12:03 of the stanza.

Kasdorf (1-1) made nine saves, before giving way to junior Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) with 16:56 left in the contest. Diebold stopped seven of the eight shots he faced. BC freshman netminder Thatcher Demko (San Diego, CA/U.S. U-18 Team) earned his first victory for the Eagles, making 25 saves.

The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they visit Boston University on Friday (7:30pm), before hosting Sacred Heart at the Houston Field House on Saturday (7pm).
