Ryan Haggerty scored twice and classmate
Scott Diebold stopped 31 shots to lead the 17th-ranked men's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over 15th-ranked Boston University at Agganis Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Terriers drop to 2-1.
RPI opened the scoring just 3:25 into the game, when senior captain
Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys) netted his second of the year, from classmate
Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) and junior
Curtis Leonard (Napanee, ON/Wellington Dukes).
Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Development Team) then added a power-play goal less than two minutes later to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Helpers on the Engineers' second goal went to juniors
Jacob Laliberte (Rockland, ON/Cornwall Colts) and
Matt Neal (Minesing, ON/Souffville Spirit).
Freshman Kevin Duane scored his first collegiate goal for the Terriers to bring the hosts to within 2-1 19:01 of the second stanza.
Haggerty reestablished a two-goal cushion for the visitors with a tally just 48 seconds into the third and the RPI defense kept the Terriers off the board the rest of the way.
Junior netminder
Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) took home the win stopping 31 of the 32 shots he faced, including 15 of 16 in the second period alone.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow night, when they host Sacred Heart at the Houston Field House (7pm).
