TROY, N.Y. - Junior defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere scored two third period goals and Union College tallied three power play goals on its way to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an ECAC Hockey contest at Houston Field House. The Dutchmen, who defeated the Engineers, 4-3, on Friday, improve to 6-3-2 overall and 5-1-0 in the league. No. 10 RPI falls to 6-4-2 and 2-3-2.
With the Dutchmen leading 2-1 in the third period, Gostisbehere (Margate, FL / South Kent School) tallied at 15:15 and again 1:10 later. His first goal of the game - and third of the season - came on a shot from the left faceoff circle through traffic. He then scored on a low shot to the far post from the right point with Union on the power play.
The scoring ended at that moment but there was plenty of action in the final five minutes as 23 penalties were called for a total of 152 minutes. There were 11 misconducts and three major penalties handed out. Union finished 3 for 9 on the power play, while the Engineers were 0 for 6.
Following a scoreless first period, Union opened a 2-0 lead with a pair of power play goals. Freshman Eli Lichtenwald (Saskatoon, SK / Nipawin Hawks) scored at 3:34 when his shot slid between the legs of RPI goalie
Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY / Tri-City Storm). Mat Bodie (East St. Paul, MB / Powell River Kings) and Kevin Sullivan (Darien, CT / Berkshire School) had the assists. For Sullivan, who returned to the lineup after being sideline due to injury, the assist was his 12th of the season. He picked up his 13th, which is among the most by any player in the country, on a power play goal by senior Daniel Carr (Sherwood Park, AB / Powell River Kings) at 5:37. Sullivan won the faceoff to Bodie, who fed the puck to Carr for a slap shot into the top right corner just eight seconds into the man-advantage.
RPI pulled to within one goal at 14:49 of the middle frame when the Engineers capitalized on sustained pressure during and after a power play. Senior
Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON / Kingston Voyageurs) finally found a loose puck on a scramble in front and slipped it over the goal line. Union goalie Colin Stevens (Niskayuna, NY / Boston Junior Bruins) made several outstanding saves in the sequence despite not having his stick before the goal was scored. Junior
Matt Neal (Minesing, ON / Stoufville Spirit) and senior
Bo Dolan (St. Paul, MN / Penticton Vees) had the assists.
Stevens finished with 17 saves for the win to improve to 5-1-0. Diebold made 22 stops in falling to 5-3-2.
The Engineers travel to Mercyhurst University for a pair of games next weekend, while the Dutchmen play at Penn State on November 30 and December 1.
