Engineers rebound with 5-2 victory over Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - Junior Ryan Haggerty netted a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the 14th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Mercyhurst University, this evening in non-league action. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-5-2, while the Lakers drop to 5-7-1. 

Leading 3-2 heading into the third period, Rensselaer broke the game open, scoring twice. Junior Curtis Leonard buried his first of the season from Mike Zalewski and Mark Miller at 8:05. Classmate Jacob Laliberte then netted his third of the year, unassisted at 13:50 of the stanza. 

Guy Leboeuf opened the scoring at 2:52 of the opening frame. Assists on his third of the campaign went to senior Brock Higgs and Haggerty. Haggerty then the first of his two on the evening at 15:31 to make it 2-0 RPI. Freshman Jake Wood and Laliberte had the helpers. 

The hosts pulled to within 2-1 at 9:06 of the second period, a tally by Kyle Dutra. Matthew Zay and Daniel O'Donoghue earned the assists on Dutra's third of the season. After Haggerty made it 3-1 at 17:51 of the second, Grant Gettinger snapped home his first of the year to make a 3-2 game with less than 18 seconds remaining.

RPI then added its two insurance goals in the third. The Engineers held a 28-25 edge in shots on the night, while going 1 for 5 on the power-play. The Lakers went 0 for 4 on the man advantage. 

Junior Scott Diebold made 23 saves to improve to 6-4-2 on the year, while Jimmy Sarjeant also recorded 23 stops.

The Engineers return to the Houston Field House on December 6 and 7, when they host fourth-ranked Quinnipiac and Princeton on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm), respectively.
