TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Ryan Haggerty scored twice, including his nation-leading 13th of the year, to help the 10th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 6-2 win over Colgate, in ECAC Hockey action at Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-2-2 overall (2-1-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Raiders drop to 4-6-1 (2-2-0 ECAC Hockey).
Senior
Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) swooped in for a wraparound goal at 6:55 of the first period to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Senior captain
Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys) and sophomore
Phil Hampton (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) picked up the helpers on Higgs' seventh of the season.
RPI made it 2-0 less than three minutes later, when
Guy Leboeuf (West Palm Beach, FL/Cornwall Colts) scored a shorthanded goal from inside his own blue line. After a two-on-one chance was turned away up ice, the puck fell to Leboeuf, who wristed it down the ice. As Colgate freshman netminder Charlie Finn (North Vancouver, BC/Kingston Voyageurs) came out to play the puck, it skipped over his left shoulder and into the net. The tally was Leboeuf's second in as many nights.
The Engineers took a 3-0 lead at 1:46 in the second period, as junior
Mark McGowan (Toronto, ON/Oakville Blades) cleaned up a Leonard rebound for his first goal of the season. Colgate drew to within 3-1 with a power play goal at 9:22 of the second, as Tylor Spink (Williamstown, ON/Cornwall Colts) took an assist from his brother, Tyson, with a secondary assist to Mike Borkowski (Kanata, ON/Cornwall Colts).
Haggerty (Stamford, CT/US National Dev. Team) tallied 4:21 into the third stanza, on a heavy wrist shot from the middle of the slot, with an assist to
Mike Zalewski (New Hartford, NY/Vernon Vipers).
Jacob Laliberte (Rockland, ON/Cornwall Colts) extended the Engineers' lead to 5-1 just over a minute later, with McGowan and freshman
Jimmy DeVito (Bloomingdale, IL/Lincoln Stars) getting the assists.
Haggerty netted his second of the game, and his nation-leading 13th of the season at 12:08 of the third after making a move into the right circle.
Matt Neal (Minesing, ON/Stoufville Spirit) and Laliberte were credited with the helpers. Colgate would get one more score before the final horn, as Andrew Black (Buffalo, NY/Jersey Hitmen) took a helper from Mike McCann (Barrington, IL/Salisbury School) at 13:12 to set the final score.
Colgate outshot the Engineers, 17-14, and held a 24-23 advantage in face-offs. Rensselaer junior goaltender
Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) finished with 15 saves between the pipes for the Engineers. Colgate used three goalkeepers in the game. Starter Charlie Finn (North Vancouver, BC/Kingston Voyageurs) took the loss, allowing three goals and making four saves. Rensselaer was assessed eight penalties for 41 minutes, including three majors and two game misconducts.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they play a home-and-home series with Union College. RPI heads to Schenectady on Friday (7pm), before hosting the Dutchmen on Saturday (7pm).
