TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Michael Schreck's goal with six seconds left in overtime gave the Montclair State men's lacrosse team a 10-9 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at East Campus Stadium.
Schreck (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) collected a pass from classmate Michael Jevic (Voorhees, NJ / Eastern Regional) while cutting to the cage and scored his second of the game to help the Red Hawks improve to 2-0. RPI falls to 0-1. The goal was Schreck's second of the game.
RPI opened the game with the first two goals, both coming within 1:09 of each other, but Montclair tied the score at 2-2 just 16 seconds into the second quarter. The Engineers countered with the next two markers, including a man-up goal by senior
David Hey (Chapel Hill, NC / Durham Academy), for a 4-2 lead at 11:42 of the second.
The two teams traded single goals before the Red Hawks scored the final three of the half for a 6-5 edge at the break. Kenneth Bogert (Brick, NJ / Brick Township) scored at 7:09, Joel Van Der Wal (Columbia, NJ / North Warren) at 4:39 and Bogert again, this time with just 39 seconds left. All three goals were unassisted.
Montclair increased its lead to three goals at the start of the second half, including a goal at 13:55 on an outstanding individual effort by Sam Morrissey (Hackettstown, NJ / West Morris Central. The junior attack was able to flip a shot into the net from close range despite having Rensselaer defenders draped all over him.
RPI pulled to within one goal, 8-7, by answering with a
Patrick Finn (North Easton, MA / Thayer Academy) a minute after the Red Hawks scored and a
Brett Overend (Laguna Hills, CA / Laguna Hills) marker within a minute of Finn's goal. The goals were the second of the game for both Finn and Overand.
After Jevic gave the visitors a 9-7 lead, RPI scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter when
Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA / The Hill School) scored his second of the game at 11:31 and
Eric Valero (Princeton Junction, NJ / W. Windsor Plainsboro) his first at 5:41.
Junior Michael Dorn (Blairstown, NJ / North Warren) made 12 saves for the win, while senior
James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY / Niskayuna) took the loss. He had two saves on six shots in 33:54 of relief.
Rensselaer is right back in action on Wednesday when it hosts SUNY Plattsburgh at 4pm. Montclair plays Dickinson on Wednesday.
