CANTON, N.Y. - Senior wing CJ Lee scored on a shot from behind the goal line 2:34 into overtime to lift Rensselaer to a 4-3 ECAC Hockey victory over St. Lawrence on Friday night.
The Engineers, 11-11-5 overall and 6-6-3 jumped into fifth in the ECAC Hockey standings, a point in front of the 12-11-4, 5-6-4 Saints with the win while the Saints are now seventh in a tight race. RPI's win was its third straight and fifth in its last six games.
Junior wing Jeremy Wick gave the Saints an early lead as he scored on a power play from Greg Carey just 2:20 into the game. RPI came back with a pair of power play goals of its own to take a 2-1 lead as
Matt Neal scored his fifth of the year at 7:26 and
Ryan Haggerty put the Engineers in front at 9:54.
St. Lawrence senior Kyle Flanagan tied the game with a power play goal 2:19 into the second period as each team scored on its first two power play chances, but RPI went back in front when
Nick Bailen scored his sixth of the season just seconds after an RPI power play had expired.
Carey, who leads the nation in goal-scoring, picked up his 19th of the season on a power play at 13:13 of the third to make it 3-3 and it stayed that way until the midpoint of the overtime when Lee went deep into the corner in the offensive zone and wristed a shot toward the front of the net which hit Saint goalie Matt Weninger's blocker and deflected into the net for the game-winner.
Weninger finished with 29 saves for the Saints, who sustained their first overtime loss of the season. Freshman
Jason Kasdorf made 27 saves for the win for RPI, who got a goal and an assist from Bailen and Neal and a pair of helpers from
Jacob Laliberte.
