TROY, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Jake Quinn scored just 21 seconds into overtime to give the Union College men's lacrosse team a dramatic victory, 11-10, over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Stadium. The unassisted goal moves the Dutchmen's record to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the league. The Engineers, who were playing their final home game of the season, fall to 5-7 and 1-4.
After winning the opening faceoff of the overtime, Union gained the offensive zone and called a timeout to set up a play. The ball ended up in Quinn's (Hingham, MA / Hingham) stick and he finished the play with a shot that bounced through the goalie's legs. It was his fourth goal of the season.
The game was sent to overtime with 1:12 left in regulation when RPI senior
Mike Sarson (Lewis Center, OH / St. Francis DeSales) collected a
Casey Colligan (Baldwinsville, NY / CW Baker) feed at the doorstep and flicked the ball into the top right corner. The goal was the third of the game for Sarson, who entered the contest with two goals.
The game opened with an even first half that ended with Union leading, 5-4. Junior Rob Santangelo (Rye, NY / Westminster School) had the first two goals for the Dutchmen, including the first of the game on a nifty shot while coming around the back of the goal. RPI answered both times and went ahead 4-2 on a pair of goals from senior
Eric Valero (Princeton Junction, NJ / W. Windsor Plainsboro) and a man-up goal from classmate
Brett Overend (Laguna Hills, CA / Laguna Hills). Union tallied the final three goals of the half, including a Nate Greenberg (Westport, CT / Staples) marker with only 14 seconds left in the half.
Rensselaer controlled the third quarter, outscoring the visitors, 5-1. Freshman
Patrick Finn (North Easton, MA / Thayer Academy) tied the score at 11:55 and Colligan put the Engineers ahead 1:35 later. Union bounced back to tie the score, 6-6, but Sarson scored the next two goals and
Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA / The Hill School), another senior, made it a 9-6 lead with 18 seconds remaining.
Union rattled off four straight goals in a 5:06 span in the fourth quarter, including Santangelo's third of the game, before Sarson tied the score at 10-10.
In addition to Santangelo, others with multiple points for the Dutchmen were senior attack Nolan Connors (Niskayuna, NY / Niskayuna), who scored twice, and sophomore midfielder Adam Rosenthal (Tiburon, CA / Northfield Mt. Hermon), who had a goal and an assist. Senior Alex Stone (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) was key on the faceoffs for Union, winning 18 of 25 and collecting a game-high 15 ground balls. Sophomore Stefan Basile (Fayetteville, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) made 11 saves to improve to 6-5.
RPI got nine saves from junior
Alex Castronovo (Garden City, NY / Garden City). Sarson (3 goals) and Valero (2 goals) each had multiple goals, while Finn had a goal and three assists. Colligan and
Colin Fortuner (Litchfield, CT / The Master's School) had a goal and an assist each.
