Box Score
TROY, N.Y. – Senior Mike Perlow recorded a game-high four points to lead the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team to an, 8-6, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this afternoon in Liberty League action from East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 4-6 (2-1 Liberty), while the Engineers drop to 5-5 (1-2 Liberty).
RPI junior captain
Alex Castronovo (Garden City, NY/Garden City) was fantastic between the pipes, making 16 saves, including 10 in the second half. The 16 stops where four shy of his career-high of 20, which he set last season at Clarkson.
Perlow (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) netted three goals on the day, while adding an assist. His man-up tally with 9:21 left in the fourth quarter provided a cushion, which the Thoroughbreds were able to ride to the final horn.
The two teams trade goals early on until Perlow broke a 2-2 tie with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter. RPI senior
Brett Overend (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) kept the hosts with striking distance scoring two of his game-high five goals in the opening stanza.
Skidmore continued its scoring run, however, taking on three more goals in the second quarter, before Overend ended the run with 1:45 remaining in the half. The Thoroughbreds took a 6-3 advantage into the break, despite just a slight 18-17 edge in shots.
Overend's fourth goal of the game brought the Engineers to within 6-4 early in the third quarter, but Skidmore sophomore Matt Ohara (La Jolla, CA/La Jolla) pushed the visitors lead back three (7-4), four minutes later.
Markers from Overend – his fifth of the game and 24th of the year – and classmate
Eric Valero (Princeton Junction, NJ/W. Windsor Plainsboro) drew Renssealer to within 7-6 with 13:28 to go in the fourth quarter, but could not beat Skidmore junior netminder Matt Diaco (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) the rest of the way.
Diaco, who improve to 3-6, made eight saves to earn the win, while Castronovo moves to 0-2. Overend's five goals match his career-high, which he also achieved last season against RIT.
The Engineers are back on the field this Saturday, when they travel to fifth-ranked RIT (1pm).
