SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute men's soccer team defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy 2-0 in the second game of the Union Soccer Classic. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-0 on the season and remain unbeaten in their last 11 season-openers (10-0-1).
RPI opened the scoring early as sophomore midfielder Matt Carberry buried the feed from classmate Esmir Hadzic in the second minute.
An abundance of mid-field play was the theme of the game and the first half ended with the Engineers leading 1-0.
RPI was quick to strike in the second half as well as senior defenseman Ian Halter registered his first goal of the season and the first of his collegiate career. Halter buried a header past senior goaltender Gary Poulin. Junior midfielder Matt Koizol, one of Engineers' captains and the leading scorer from a year ago, registered his first point of the season with the pass to Halter off a free kick.
USMMA sophomore forward Dan Weldon received a yellow card after an incident in the 88th minute. RPI junior goalkeeper Rob Dewald made the lone save of the night off a quick shot by Mariner's senior midfielder Kevin Pfeil.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they take on Berkeley (NJ) at College Park Field in Schenectady (4:30pm).
