Men's Basketball Shoots Down Union, 107-78

TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team made 45.9% of its shots, including 41.2% from three-point range, while forcing 19 turnovers and the Engineers defeated Union College, 107-78, in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. Junior Josh Dugas had a team-high 21 points for RPI, which improved to 7-11 overall and 5-4 in the league. The Dutchmen fall to 5-10 and 2-5.

Rensselaer scored 57 first half points on 45.5% shooting (20 of 44) from the field and held a 57-30 lead at the break. On the other end, the Engineers held Union to just 28.2% shooting (11 of 39). The second half was much like the first as RPI made 19 of 41 shots (46.3%), including seven three-pointers, to maintain its wide lead.

Dugas (Monroe, CT / St. Luke's) paced the Engineers by making 6 of 9 shots, including 3 of 3 from three-point land, and 6 of 7 free throws. Fifteen others scored for the home team, including four who had 10 points apiece. Freshman Nate Kane (Glenmont, NY / Bethlehem), sophomore Jesus Cardenas (Phoenix, AZ / Apollo), junior Jarrett Boeglin (Lexington, MA / Lexington) and sophomore Brian Hatcher (Danbury, CT / Immaculate) all chipped in with 10 points and Cardenas added seven assists. Sophomore Chase Almond (South Kingstown, RI / South Kingstown) had a team-best nine rebounds.

For Union, sophomore William Hython (Syracuse, NY / CW Baker) had a game-high 25 points on 11 of 20 shooting. He also had five rebounds and two assists. Freshman Kevin Weckworth (Randleman, NC / Bishop McGuinness) had 10 points, while sophomore Ryan Whelpley (Olean, NY / Archbishop Walsh Academy) had a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Engineers and Dutchmen are back in action with league games on Saturday afternoon at 4pm. RPI hosts Skidmore College, while Union takes on Bard College in Schenectady, N.Y.
