Jason Kasdorf made 39 saves, but the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team was shut out by 16th-ranked Denver University, this evening at Magness Arena. With the win, the Pioneers open the season at 1-0, while the Engineers drop to 1-2.
Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Bucs) stopped all 20 shots he faced in the first period, and 11 in the second, including five during a five-minute Denver power-play.
The Pioneers broke through at 12:41 of the second stanza, when junior Quentin Shore (Denver, CO) ripped a shot off the post and in, after the Engineers turned the puck over in their own zone. The eventual game-winning goal was assisted by senior Zac Larraza (Scottsdale, AZ) and freshman Danton Heinen (Langley, BC).
Denver made it 2-0 at 15:41 of the frame, when Larraza redirected a shot by junior Nolan Zajac (Winnipeg, MB) past Kasdorf for a power-play goal.
The hosts capped the scoring at 19:09, on an empty net goal from senior Ty Loney (Pittsburgh, PA).
Senior Zach Shroeder (Prior Lake, MN/St. Thomas Academy) had a team-high six shots for the Engineers, while freshman blueliner
Jared Wilson (Calgary, AB/Vernon Vipers) had four.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow night for game of two of the series. Puck drop is schedule for 9:05pm ET.
