GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team extended its shutout streak 344:44 with a scoreless draw against No. 21 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute today. The second straight tie for the Statesmen leaves their record at 8-4-3 overall, 2-2-2 in the Liberty League. The end of the Engineers' three match winning streak leaves their record at 10-2-3, 5-1-1.
Junior Tyler Serafine went the distance in the goal for Hobart, making four saves. He's appeared in nine matches this season, including four straight starts, and hasn't allowed a goal since giving up five to now seventh-ranked Brandeis in the season opener on Aug. 30. Serafine's shutout streak stands at 509:46. For RPI, sophomore
Alex Kessler posted a pair of saves for his second shutout of the year.
The Engineers carried the play in the first half, outshooting Hobart 5-0, but didn't put any shots on frame, despite a pair of quality chances early in the match.
In the second half, RPI kept the pressure on, but the Statesmen were able to generate some chances of their own. The top scoring opportunity belonged to RPI sophomore
Dylan Weitz, who received a drop pass 10 yards outside the box and one-timed a laser to the left of Serafine, who was able to block the shot. Unable to collect the loose ball, the Engineers were able to generate another chance just seconds later, but junior
Esmir Hadzic's header ended up over the crossbar.
In the first overtime, Hobart seized the momentum with an early surge. The Statesmen earned a corner kick less than a minute in and generated a flurry of action in the box but it ended with sophomore Clint Dunn's shot going wide of the cage.
Both goalies recorded a save in the second overtime session with Hobart senior Oddmund Nesbakk coming closest to scoring the golden goal. He sent a high-arcing header on frame with enough spin on it that Kessler had trouble fielding it cleanly. He had to scramble to collect the rebound ahead of a hard-charging Statesmen striker.
RPI ended up with a 14-9 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Hobart will be on the road for its next match, visiting Elmira at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21. The Engineers will travel to Vassar on Saturday, Oct. 25 for a 2 p.m. match.
