KEENE, N.H.- Conor Leahy and Promise Kpee each scored a goal as the Keene State College men's soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the final non-conference game of the season at Owl Athletic Complex.
Â
The Owls reach double-digits in wins, and are now 10-6-1, while the Engineers suffer their first loss since September 20 and are 11-3-3.
Â
Keene State, which outshot the Engineers 20-8, could have taken the lead as early as the fifth minute when Cam Rodgers unleashed a shot from distance, but RPI's
Rob Dewald got down to make the save. Â
Â
Leahy was next to try his hand, heading wide in the 12th minute. Â The Owls made the breakthrough seven minutes later, as Riley Steele ran down the right side of the field before crossing for Leahy to poke in his team best sixth goal of the season.Â
Â
Mike Ketterman made the first of his six saves when he kept out
Matt Koziol's header, and Kpee could have made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, but shot right at Dewald.
Â
Leading 1-0 at halftime, the Owls got a second 20 minutes after the restart. Â Steele was also involved in KSC's second goal, again taking advantage of the freedom down the right before finding Rogers. Â His pass to Kpee gave the freshman just enough space to chip the ball over Dewald for his fifth of the year.
Â
Vito Mestiti had RPI's best chance of the second half, forcing Ketterman to dive and make a fingertip save off his headed effort, but RPI could not find the net. Â
Â
RPI had only given up six goals this season prior to tonight's game, and had allowed just one score in their last five contests.
Â
The Owls will host Southern Maine in the regular season finale on Saturday at Owl Athletic Complex. Â Before the game, seniors Charlie Pilger, Nick Godzyk, Nate Banas, Mike Ketterman, Michael Jacques, Yazid Eidah, Pat Anthony, and Kaleb Lique-Naitove will be honored. Â RPI will prepare for the upcoming Liberty League tournament, where they will be the No. 2 seed.
