No. 18 Men's Soccer Upended by St. Lawrence, 2-0

TROY, N.Y. - St. Lawrence University (SLU) scored two second half goals and the Saints held off No. 18 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-0, in a Liberty League contest at a rainy East Campus Stadium. SLU improves to 9-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference, while the Engineers fall to 7-2-2 and 2-1-0.

Junior Harry Copeland (Dedham, MA / St. Marks) gave the visitors the only goal they would need when he headed home a Mark Provost (Toronto, ON / Birchmount Park CI) free kick from 20 yards out on the sideline. Copeland earned his fourth goal of the season by directing the ball into the lower left corner of the net from 10 yards out in the 53rd minute.

RPI's Paul Lentine (Penfield, NY / Penfield Senior) had an excellent chance to tie the game in the 64th minute but his shot from off-center from 10 yards out was knocked over the crossbar by St. Lawrence sophomore goalkeeper Sean Houston (Williamstown, MA / Mt. Greylock Regional). The Engineers continued the pressure and four minutes later had a chance off a Tim Terrezza (New Providence, NJ / New Providence) cross, but it sailed too high and through the box.

St. Lawrence made it 2-0 in the 81st minute when senior Austin Roney (Fayetteville, NY / Jamesville-Dewitt) drilled a shot from just outside the 18 yard box that eluded RPI netminder Rob Dewald (Arlington, VA / Washington-Lee), hit off the post and deflected off Dewald's back for the goal. It was the second goal of the season for Roney.

The Engineers ended the game on a flurry as junior Brett Pyser (Easthampton, MA / Williston Northampton) had two shots on goal with under a minute to play in the second half, but both were stopped by Houston, his fifth and sixth of the afternoon. Dewald did not record any stops.

St. Lawrence held an 11-7 edge in shots, while both teams had four corner kicks.

Rensselaer returns to action on Wednesday night when it travels to Schenectady to play Union College in a league match. The Saints play again next Saturday at Liberty League foe Rochester Institute of Technology beginning at 2pm.
