Miller Leads Men's Hockey to a 3-1 Win Over Princeton

TROY, N.Y. -- Mark Miller scored twice to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 3-1 win over Princeton in ECAC Men's Hockey action on Friday evening at Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-6-0 overall, with a 4-1-0 mark in the league, while Princeton drops to 1-3-1 with a 1-2-0 conference slate.

Miller started off the scoring for the Engineers at 8:45 of the first period. Drew Melanson (Paramus, NJ / Waterloo Black Hawks) passed the puck ahead to Miller in the mid-slot range, where Miller fired it past Princeton goaltender Colton Phinney (Chatham, NJ / Islanders). Curtis Leonard (Napanee, ON / Wellington Dukes) picked up the secondary assist.

The Engineers doubled their advantage just over three minutes later on a power play, as Jacob Laliberte (Rockland, ON / Cornwall Colts) set up defenseman Jared Wilson (Calgary, AB / Vernon Vipers) in the slot for the freshman's second goal of the season. Milos Bubela (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia / Dubuque) was credited with the second assist, giving RPI a 2-0 lead at 11:52.

The two teams skated through a scoreless second period before Miller tallied his second of the night in the third. Riley Bourbonnais (Rochester, NY / Lincoln Stars) passed the puck to Miller in the near circle, and the junior blasted a forehand shot into the back of the net at 10:19. Princeton nearly scored as the puck ricocheted off the pipe behind RPI goalie Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB / Des Moines Bucs), and the Tigers finally capitalized at 12:00 on the power play. Ben Foster (Darien, CT / Tri-City) took assists from Ryan Siiro (Bloomington, MN / Sioux Falls) and Aaron Ave (Chandler, AZ / Omaha) to avoid the shutout.

Rensselaer outshot the Tigers, 35-25, and held a 31-24 advantage in faceoff wins. Both teams were 1-for-3 on power play opportunities. Kasdorf totaled 24 saves, including 12 in the final period, while Phinney racked up 32 saves, with 12 in each of the first two periods.

The Engineers will return to ECAC Hockey action on Saturday evening, hosting Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. The Bobcats defeated Union, 4-3, on Friday night in Schenectady.
