TROY, N.Y. -- Jorrdan McCray recorded a game-high 17 points to lead Sage to a 77-65 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in non-conference men's basketball action on Tuesday evening at East Campus Arena. With the loss, RPI falls to 1-2 on the young season, while the Gators improve to 3-1.
The two teams played a closely contested first half, with both teams exchanging runs. Travis Gill put Sage on top, 17-13, with a jumper at 12:19, but a 3-pointer by
Asa Barnhill on RPI's ensuing possession pulled the game back to within a point. The Engineers took the lead on a
Nate Kane trey with 6:32 left to play in the first half, but the Gators took a 30-27 lead with just under five minutes to play on two free throws from Brett Ullman and a jumper by Kai Deans.
Jonathan Luster responded for the Engineers with a 3-pointer to knot the game once again with 4:33 left to play. Sage's Andre Robinson scored the final basket of the half with just four seconds left to play to give the Gators a 35-33 lead heading to the locker room.Â
Robinson then scored the first two baskets of the second half for Sage, to help push the Gator lead to 39-35 early on. He drained a 3-pointer with 6:11 on the clock to start an 11-point run for Sage, putting the Gators on top, 71-55. The Engineers were unable to recover from the Gator rally, despite some late points by
Josh Dugas and
Tyler Gendron in the last 1:34. Matt LaClair set the final score by hitting two free throws with just ten seconds to go.Â
RPI was led by
Brian Hatcher, who finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Gendron added 15 points and seven boards. Dugas chipped in with 11 points and three assists for Rensselaer, which shot 37.9 percent (25-66) from the floor in the game.Â
Along with McCray, Sage received 16 points from Robinson, while Deans totaled 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Gators accumulated seven blocks in the game, getting four from Jacob Sopchak, while the team shot 45.5 percent (30-66) from the floor. Sage outrebounded the Engineers, 52-34.
Rensselaer will return to action on Nov. 30, visiting Middlebury at 2 p.m.
