TROY, N.Y. -- Behind a double-double from
Amanda Lynch, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team defeated crosstown-rival Sage, 76-62, on Tuesday evening at East Campus Arena. Lynch finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Engineers, while teammate
Ashley Clough recorded a game-high 22 points. With the win, RPI improves to 3-3 overall, while the Gators drop to 2-3 on the season.
Clough started the game with a 3-pointer, and the Engineers built up a 12-4 lead on a
Bailei Tetrault layup with just under 16 minutes to play in the first. A lay-in by Lynch pushed the lead to ten, 16-6, at the 14:10 mark. The Engineers held at least a ten-point lead through most of the first half, getting ahead by as many as 11, 21-10, at 10:21 on a runner by
Shaina Iton. Sage cut the lead to 22-16 with just under eight minutes to go in the first half on a layup by Frankie Pearson, but RPI continued to roll, pushing the advantage to 29-16 on a Lynch free throw at 3:24. Clough made one-of-two shots from the line with under ten seconds to play in the half to put the Engineers ahead, 34-20, but Sage's Carlee Hirt nailed a jumper at the buzzer to send the teams to the locker room with RPI on top, 34-22.
The Gators outscored RPI, 6-2, to start the second half and pull back within single digits, 36-28, on a Sara Tironi jumper with 18:34 to play. The teams exchanged baskets until an eight-point run by the Gators pulled Sage to within four, 48-44, with 11:44 left to play. The Gators continued to keep the score within striking distance, but RPI went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a 3-pointer by
Ellen Boucher with just over five mintues on the clock to extend the lead to 63-50. Clough scored nine of RPI's last 13 points in the waning minutes to preserve the victory for the Engineers.
Along with Lynch and Clough, Rensselaer got double digit scoring totals from Tetrault, who finished with 12 on 5-of-8 shooting. Iton uplled down nine boards for the Engineers, to go along with four points and a game-best five blocks.
Courtney Reynolds added five points, five rebounds, six steals, and two assists for RPI.
Tironi led Sage with 16 points, while Megan Bowman chipped in with 13 points to go along with six rebounds, eight assists, and three steals. The Gators shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the flooor in the game, while holding the Engineers to 37.2 percent shooting (29-78). Rensselaer held a slight rebound advantage over the Gators, 45-42.
RPI will return to action on Dec. 2, hosting Keene State at East Campus Arena at 6 p.m.Â
