Women's Soccer Beaten by SLU on Penalties

Engineers double up Saints in shots, but play to scoreless draw after 110 minutes

TROY, N.Y. - After battling to a 0-0 draw, junior goalkeeper Kelsey Westmade a pair of saves in penalties to help the third-seeded St. Lawrence University women's soccer team and advance to the Liberty League Championship game on penalty kicks over second-seeded Renssealer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this evening at East Campus Stadium. The Saints will travel to top-seeded William Smith on Saturday at 1pm.

RPI outshot the Saints 16-8 through regulation and both overtimes and had a commanding 8-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

St. Lawrence had an opportunity to end things in the first overtime, when freshman Kaleigh White had Riopelle beat but her shot clipped the near post and skipped across the goal mouth. Shelby Stromerson was the first to the loose ball and was able to clear to the right sideline for the Engineers to keep things scoreless.

Adrianna Morra, Emily DePoy, Kaleigh White and Samantha Rock each cashed in on their shootout chances to help the Saints to victory.

Morra got things started for the Saints with a shot along the ground to the right side of RPI keeper Tori Riopelle.

Shelby Stromerson lined up as the first shooter for the Engineers, but Kelsey West made a diving save to her right to keep the Saints in front.

Depoy's kick froze Riopelle in the middle of the net, as the junior midfielder hit a perfectly-placed ball along the ground into the left corner for a 2-0 St. Lawrence advantage.

Dana Sailor cut it to 2-1 on an attempt that was initially saved by West as she dove to her right. However, the ball hit off the post, trickled back along the goal line and in before the Saints keeper could regain her footing and smother the ball.

White, a first-year student and the Saints leading scorer this season, stepped to the line and hit a strike with authority into the middle of the net for a 3-1 lead in the shootout.

Sandy Kirk converted her attempt for the Engineers but Samantha Rock countered with a goal of her own on a shot that she tucked just under the outstretched hands of the Engineers' keeper to give the Saints the 4-2 advantage.

West's final stop came as she dove to her right, stopping Stephanie May's try at the right side of goal.

In addition to her stops in penalties, West made six saves in the contest, including two in the second overtime. Riopelle finished with three saves for the Engineers.
