Springfield, Mass. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) compiled 427 yards of offense, while holding Springfield College to 279 yards and the Engineers defeated the Pride, 37-13, in a Liberty League contest at Stagg Field. RPI improves to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the league heading into next week's season finale against Union College in the Dutchman Shoes Trophy Game. Springfield drops to 5-4 and 3-3.
RPI's defense limited the Pride to just 229 yards on the ground. Springfield entered the game with the nation's second-ranked ground attack, averaging over 353 yards per contest. The Engineers also caused three turnovers, including a fumble that was returned 21 yards for a touchdown by senior
Nick Borkowski and the sixth interception of the season for junior Phil Lanieiri III. Borkowski finished with a team-best eight tackles (6 solo), while Lanieri had six stops (5 solo).
RPI added to its lead with a defensive touchdown as Borkowski scooped up a Jonathan Marrero fumble and found paydirt from 21 yards out just 52 seconds into the second quarter. With 3:15 left in the half, Joey Giacone elevated to snag a five-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Morgan, capping a six-play, 63 yard drive to push the visitors lead to 16-0.
The Engineers scored the only touchdown on the third quarter when Morgan lofted a five-yard pass to Matt Lane, who beat the Springfield secondary for the score to push the score to 23-0. Fellow running back Austin Amery punched in his first touchdown of the game 20 seconds into the fourth quarter before the Pride finally broke through with 7:55 on the clock. Marrero connected with Drew Brown for a 15 yard strike.
The Engineers scored their final touchdown of the afternoon on another score from Amery, this time from a yard out at 2:30 of the fourth quarter to make it a 37-7 game. Springfield closed out the scoring with 0.8 seconds left in the contests when Shane Ireland snagged a 17-yard score from Tim O'Brien.
Nick Schaltz ran for team-best 76 yards and Morgan was 10-for-19 for 116 yards and two scores. He was not intercepted. Â Â Marrero led Springfield with 76 yards on the ground. Defensively, Max Ford was credited with a game-high 10 tackles, while both Max Nacewicz and Brian Kelly made nine stops.Â
RPI owned a 33:27 to 26:33 edge in time of possession in large part by holding Springfield to just 4 of 16 on third down conversions.
Rensselaer hosts Union in what is the oldest college football rivalry in New York State on Saturday at noon at East Campus Stadium. The Pride wrap up its regular season on Saturday at in-state foe WPI at noon.
