CANTON, N.Y. – Junior Ryan Haggerty scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 4-3 victory over St. Lawrence University, this evening at Appleton Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 11-11-4 (5-6-3 ECAC Hockey), while the Saints drop to 9-14-3 (3-8-3 ECAC Hockey).

Trailing by a goal (3-2) entering the third period, RPI sophomore Mark Miller (Massena, NY/Omaha Lancers) netted his second of the year to tie the game at 3-3. Taking a feed from inside the right circle by junior Mark McGowan (Toronto, ON/Oakville Blades), Miller rifled a shot just under the crossbar at 6:00 of the frame.

Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Dev. Team) then gave the Engineers the lead for good at 10:48 of the third, picking up a loose puck behind the net and sticking backhanded shot home for his second of the game and team-leading 21st of the season. Senior Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) earned the lone assist.

Mike Zalewski opened the scoring at 43 second of the first period, when he corralled the rebound of a shot by senior Guy Leboeuf (West Palm Beach, FL/Cornwall Colts) and flipped it past St. Lawrence senior netminder Matt Weninger (Lethbridge, AB) for his sixth tally of the year and third in as many games.

St. Lawrence senior Jeremy Wick (Grand Valley, ON) tied the score at 12:15 of the first, with a power-play tally. Assists on the goal went to Justin Baker (Toronto, ON) and Gavin Bayreuther (Canaan, NH). The Engineers answered 2:16 later, when Haggerty fired a shot through the legs of Weninger, giving the visitors back their one-goal lead (2-1).

Baker brought the Saints even at 2-2 with his sixth of the year at 7:29 of the second stanza. Bayreuther picked up the primary helper, while classmate Alexander Dahl (Eau Claire, WI) earned the secondary.

Senior captain Kyle Essery (Mississauga, ON) gave St. Lawrence its only lead of the game at 17:36 of the second firing past RPI junior goaltender Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) for his first of the year.

Diebold (10-10-4) finished with 22 saves, including 10 in the first period. Weninger had 25 stops, with 12 coming in the second. Haggerty two-game game was his nation-leading seventh of the year.

The Engineers return to the ice next weekend, when they host 13th-ranked Yale and Brown, on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), at the Houston Field House. Saturday's match-up with the Bears will be the 37th Annual Big Red Freakout!
