TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore J.P. Reagan scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) men's basketball team to a 100-77 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this evening in Liberty League play from East Campus Arena. With the win, the Tigers improve to 15-9 overall (9-6 Liberty), while the Engineers drop to 8-16 (6-9 Liberty).
Reagan (Cortland, NY/Cortland) connected on 10 of 14 shots from the floor, including 6 of 7 from three-point range. He was aided offensively by junior Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) who had 15 points and sophomore Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) who turned in a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Engineers saw sophomore
Chase Almond (South Kingston, RI/South Kingston) drop in 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting. Senior captain
Reggie Colas (Miami, FL/Belen Jesuit) chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot, while classmate
Nick Keefe (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) had nine points.
RIT started to pull away just three minutes in the contest, creating a nine-point cushion (20-11) by the 5:30 mark of the opening half. A lay-up from RPI sophomore
Nash Widowski (Macedonia, OH/Western Reserve Academy) trimmed the deficit to 20-15 with a lay-up, before RIT went on a 9-4 run to take a 28-19 lead at the midway point of the stanza.
A triple from Tigers freshman Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) extended the advantage to 38-25, before a three from Rensselaer senior
Sean Dempsey (Wallingford, CT/Notre Dame) and a pair of free-throws from Widowski made it an eight-point game (38-30) with just under seven minutes left in the half.
RIT outscored the Engineers 15-10 to close out opening 20 minutes, taking a 53-40 lead to the break.
The Tigers' lead ballooned to 20 points (70-50) less than seven minutes into the second half, thanks to a lay-up from senior Brendan Reinert (Wheatfield, NY/Starpoint).
Renssealer managed to climb within 20 points and several occasion, but no closer, as RIT finished the game shooting 54.8% (34 for 62) for the field and 42.9% (9 for 21) from beyond the arc.
Rensselaer is back in action tomorrow afternoon, when it visits area-rival Union College in its regular season finale (4pm). RIT travels to Saratoga Springs to face Skidmore (4pm).
