Engineers fall in a final contest of 2013-14 season, 97-89

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Terell Winney scored 23 points and William Hython had 12 rebounds with his 20 points as the Union College men's basketball team defeated RPI, 97-89 at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday. The Dutchmen finished the 2013-14 season with a 10-14 overall mark and a 7-9 slate in Liberty League play. RPI finished 8-17 and 8-10.

Hython recorded his seventh double double, and Ryan Whelpley had a game high nine rebounds. Callies added seven boards and Deshon Burgess scored 11 points with eight rebounds for Union, which shot 52% and had a season high 60 rebounds (finishing with a 21 rebound advantage).

Josh Dugas led RPI with 20 points and Jonathan Luster scored 16. Sean Dempsey tallied 12 and Chase Almond had 10 with seven rebounds. The Engineers made 80% of the free throws (12 for 15) and Brian Hatcher also had seven boards.

Union shot 56% in the first half and took a four point lead into the break, 52-48. The Dutchmen led 31-21 with 9:53 left after a bucket by Burgess, but RPI got as close as two on a three pointer by Luster with 43 seconds left made it 50-48. The Engineers were within three at 67-64 with 13:03 left after a Hatcher layup. But Union had a run of 13-5 featuring six points by Hython over a span of 5:29 and led 80-69. With 30 seconds left, two free throws by Dugas made it a five point game (94-89), but Union made the final three free throws to close out the triumph.

Prior to the contests, seniors Brian DeBisschop and Keith Callies were honored. They were a part of the 20-6 team that won the Liberty League regular season title last season.
