TROY, N.Y. -- Mike Zalewski scored the game's first goal just 34 seconds into play, while Mark McGowan netted the final tally to go along with an earlier assist, leading Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 4-1 win over Brown in the 37th Annual Big Red Freakout! on Saturday evening at Houston Field House. With the victory, the Engineers improve to 12-12-4 overall with a 6-7-3 mark in ECAC Hockey play, while Brown drops to 9-11-3, and 6-9-1 in the league.

Zalewski (New Hartford, NY / Vernon Vipers) got the game off to a quick start, flipping the puck into the top right corner immediately off the first faceoff. Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, CT / US National Dev. Team) and Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON / Kingston Voyageurs) assisted on the tally. The Engineers extended their lead at the 14-minute mark, as Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD / Olds Grizzlys) scored his first of two goals on the night, taking a pass from Travis Fulton (Oakville, ON / Vaughn Vipers) in the slot, and shooting the puck past Brown goaltender Tyler Steel (Vernon, BC / Merritt Centennials). Bo Dolan (St. Paul, MN / Penticton Vees) picked up the second assist.

Brown cut the advantage to 2-1 before the end of the first period, as Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John, BC / Langley Chiefs) capitalized on a power play for the Bears, finding the back of the net with a quick shot past RPI's Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY / Tri-City Storm). Matt Lorito (Oakville, ON / Villanova Knights) and Massimo Lamacchia (Vaughan, ON / Coquitlam Express) assisted on the tally.

Tinordi netted his second goal of the night at 13:55 of the second period on a power play opportunity to push the Rensselaer advantage to 3-1. McGowan (Toronto, ON / Oakville Blades) passed the puck to Tinordi in the far circle, where the senior winger took a wrist shot that deflected off Steel's glove. Dolan recorded his second assist on the evening on the tally.

The two-goal lead held until late in the final period, when McGowan got in on the scoring action at 17:36. Zach Schroeder (Prior Lake, MN / Saint Thomas Academy) passed ahead to McGowan, who skated in on Steel through the slot, taking a quick shot past the freshman netminder. A scuffle late in the period that resulted in five penalties led to another power play for the Engineers, who controlled the puck for the final minute and a half, sealing up a second consecutive Freakout! victory.

RPI outshot the Bears, 29-19, and held a 38-32 advantage in faceoffs. Diebold made 18 saves between the pipes for the Engineers, while Steel finished with 25 saves for Brown.

Rensselaer, which is now 20-8-5 all time in Big Red Freakout! games, will return to action on Friday, Feb. 14, visiting Cornell in ECAC Hockey action at 7 pm.
