NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The 15th-ranked Yale University men's hockey team used a four-goal third period to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 5-0, in the final regular season game for both teams. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 15-9-5 (10-8-4 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 14-14-6 (8-9-5 ECAC Hockey).

The Bulldogs opened the scoring at 9:12 of the second period when senior Jesse Root (Pittsburgh, PA) picked the puck out of a scrum and stuck it past RPI junior goaltender Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) for his 13th goal of the year. Assists on the tally went to freshman John Hayden (Greenwich, CT) and junior Tommy Fallen (Plymouth, MN).

Junior Anthony Day (Buffalo, NY) made it 2-0 at 2:25 of the third, firing a shot into the top left corner of the net from the left circle. The marker, which was his sixth of the year, was assisted by freshman Mike Doherty (Reading, MA).

Yale took a 3-0 lead when freshman Frankie DiChiara (Ronkonkoma, NY) buried his fourth of the season at 12:20 of the third. Junior Matt Killian (Basking Ridge, NJ) picked up the lone helper.

Doherty and sophomore Mike Obuchowski (W. Bloomfield, MI) then tallied less than a minute apart to cap the scoring for the home side. Doherty fired one home from a tight angle, while Obuchowski took a shot from the blue line that made its way through a screen and into the net.

Diebold finished with 36 saves, including 17 in the second period. Yale freshman netminder Alex Lyon (Baudette, MN) earned the shutout, stopping all 18 shots he faced.

The Engineers return to action next weekend, when they host Dartmouth College in the opening round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs. The best-of-three series begins on Friday (7pm) and continues through Sunday (if necessary).
