Men's Lacrosse Wins Liberty League Opener Over Vassar, 17-3

TROY, N.Y. -- Breanainn McNeally scored four goals and added two assists to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 17-3 win over Vassar in Liberty League men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at ECAV Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-2 overall, and 1-0 in conference play, while the Brewers drop to 3-3, with an 0-1 mark in the league.

Rensselaer started the game much as they did in a non-league win over Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday, scoring seven goals before Vassar could get on the board. Pat Hogan (Mt. Sinai, NY / Mt. Sinai) scored the Engineers' first goal at 13:27 of the first period, while Chaz Bell (Hopewell, NJ / Hopewell Valley) and Patrick Finn (North Easton, MA / Thayer Academy) added two more tallies within the next three minutes. McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spaulding) scored his first of the day with 8:59 to play on an assist from Finn, giving RPI a 4-0 lead after one.

Liam Mennig (Summit, NJ / Summit) scored a minute into the second period, while Scott Crow (Darnestown, MD / Bullis School) added a goal at 10:51, with both assists going to McNeally. The freshman then scored his second of the day with 6:31 to play in the first half. Vassar got on the board with 4:28 on the clock as Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) put an unassisted shot past Rensselaer goalkeeper Alex Castronovo (Garden City, NY / Garden City). However, Bell and Finn would both get assists from Crow in the span of seven seconds to put the Engineers ahead, 9-1, at the half.

Vassar would score first in the third period, getting a goal from Noah Parson (Cary, NC / Panther Creek). McNeally then scored back-to-back goals to push the Engineer lead to 11-2 with just over 5:30 to play. Tallies from Finn and Billy Gibbs (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) put RPI ahead, 13-2, at the end of three.

Mennig scored his second of the day a little over two minutes into the final quarter with an assist from Zach Moro (Huntington, NY / Harborfields). The Brewers would get their final score with 8:39 to play on a goal from Colin Cederna (Milan, MI / Saline). Aaron Shavel (Lawrenceville, NJ / Princeton Day School) scored back-to-back goals in under a minute, and Matt Krecicki (Winter Park, FL / Winter Park wrapped up the scoring with a goal at 2:36 to wrap up the scoring.

Rensselaer outshot Vassar, 45-29, and held a 33-24 advantage in groundballs. The Engineers also won 16-of-24 faceoffs, with ten going to T.J. Tynan (Bedford, NY / Fox Lane). Castronovo recorded six saves between the pipes, while backup goaltender Anthony De Los Reyes (Dix Hills, NY / St. Anthony's) stopped two shots in just over seven minutes of action. Andrew Nichol (Carmel, NY / Brewster) recorded 12 saves for the Brewers.

RPI will return to action next Saturday, March 29, visiting Clarkson in Liberty League play.
