Men's Lacrosse Defeats Skidmore, 14-4

Matt Hall scores five goals to lead Engineers

Box Score TROY, N.Y. – Matt Hall scored five goals, including three in the second quarter alone, to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 14-4 win over Skidmore in Liberty League men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
 
RPI got on the board first with a goal by Billy Gibbs (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) off an assist from Aaron Shavel (Lawrenceville, NJ / Princeton Day School) at 10:31 of the first quarter. The Thoroughbreds tied the game at 7:10 with an unassisted score by Quinn Hawkins, and the 1-1 tie held through the rest of the first period.
 
The Engineers scored five goals to start the second quarter, including three from Hall (Sudbury, MA / Lincoln-Sudbury). Hall scored the first two of the stanza, getting assists from Breanainn McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spaulding) and Patrick Finn (North Easton, MA / Thayer Academy). With 9:13 to play in the first half, Mike Hicks (Canton, MA / Boston College HS) scored his first goal of the season with a helper by Finn to put the Engineers on top, 4-1. McNeally connected with Scott Crow (Darnestown, MD / Bullis School) for a man-up goal three minutes later. Hall finished up the scoring in the half with an unassisted tally with just under four minutes to play to complete his hat trick.
 
Skidmore capitalized on an extra-man opportunity of its own to start the third quarter, as Josh Trachtenburg took an assist from Jack Metzler at 11:21. McNeally got in the scoring column at 7:34, as he put an unassisted shot in the back of the net for his 23rd goal of the season. Shavel scored his second of the day at 6:53, with the assist going to Hall, who then tallied his fourth of the game at 4:27, getting a helper from Finn. McNeally notched his third assist of the game on a goal by Crow with 3:31 to play in the third. Hall followed with this fifth of the day a minute later to push the RPI advantage to 12-2. With just a minute to play, Liam Mennig (Summit, NJ / Summit) scored his eighth goal of the season on a man-up opportunity. The Engineers got one more goal before the end of the quarter, as Shavel took an assist from Finn with just one second on the clock.
 
McNeally netted a man-up score at 11:32 of the final quarter with an assist from Finn, before Skidmore got an unassisted goal from Seth Berger at 9:51. The Thoroughbreds wrapped up the scoring in the game with a second goal by Hawkins with 1:30 left.
 
RPI outshot Skidmore, 42-20, and held a 25-21 advantage in ground balls. TJ Tynan (Bedford, NY / Fox Lane) won 15-of-21 faceoffs for the Engineers. Goalkeeper Alex Castronovo (Garden City, NY / Garden City) recorded four saves in his winning effort. Anthony De Los Reyes (Dix Hills, NY / St. Anthony's) stopped two opposing shots, while David Gibbs (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) recorded one save in backup action for Rensselaer.
 
The Engineers will return to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting #1 RIT at ECAV Stadium at 1 p.m.
