Men's Lacrosse Defeats Drew, 17-6, on Senior Day

Troy, N.Y. -- Freshman Breanainn McNeally recorded four goals and three assists to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 17-6 win over Drew University in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers wrap up the 2014 regular season with an 11-4 overall record, while Drew drops to 5-9.

Both teams scored early in the first period, with Aaron Shavel (Lawrenceville, NJ / Princeton Day School) striking first for RPI, followed by Mike Morone (Morristown, NJ /Delbarton) at 10:43 for Drew. The Engineers then rattled off three straight goals to end the period, including McNeally's first of the day at 4:31 with an assist from John Phillips (Oswego, NY / Oswego). McNeally (Severna Park, MD / Archbishop Spaulding) assisted Pat Hogan (Mt. Sinai, NY / Mt. Sinai) with 33 seconds left to set the score at 4-1 after the first quarter.

Drew's Craig Wagenblast (Toms River, NJ / Toms River) scored for the Rangers to start the second, but RPI scored 12 straight, spanning from the second to fourth periods. McNeally completed his goal scoring before the half, netting three goals in the second period.

Scott Crow (Darnestown, MD / Bullis School) scored two man-up goals on the day, with both being assisted by McNeally. The first came in the second period with less than a minute to play in the half, while the second came with 4:21 left in the third. Following Crow's second tally, Jake Weidner (Chula Vista, CA / O'Tay Ranch) and Mike Hicks (Canton, MA / Boston College HS) scored within a minute of each other to give the Engineers a 15-2 advantage after three.

Liam Mennig (Summit, NJ / Summit) completed the 12-goal run in the fourth with an unassisted tally at 13:04 left to play. Drew scored four consecutive goals in the final quarter, including back-to-back tallies by Greg Dwyer (Mountain Lakes, NJ / Mountain Lakes) to cut the Ranger deficit to ten. However, Maxen Haveles (Centreville, VA / Gonzaga College) took an assist from Tyler Reinmund (Summit, NJ / Summit) with just under 1:30 to play to set the final score.

Rensselaer outshot the Rangers, 60-17, and also held a 36-13 advantage in ground balls. RPI won 21-of-27 faceoffs in the game, led by senior T.J. Tynan (East Hampton, NY / East Hampton) who came away with 14 wins in 20 attempts. Alex Castronovo (Garden City, NY / Garden City) picked up the win for the Engineers, making four saves between the pipes, while Drew starter Kyle Mariboe (Hightstown, NJ / Peddie School) took the loss, while making ten saves for the Rangers.

The Engineers will look ahead to Friday, May 2, as they will travel up Route 7 to take on foe Union in the quarterfinals of the Liberty League Championship.
