Women's Basketball Opens League Play with 63-59 Win Over St. Lawrence

TROY, N.Y. -- Ashley Clough finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 63-59 win over St. Lawrence in Liberty League women's basketball action on Friday evening at East Campus Arena. The Engineers improved to 5-5 overall, while starting off the conference slate at 1-0, while the Saints drop to 5-3, with an 0-1 mark in the league.

After a tightly contested first half, which ended with RPI taking a 29-27 lead to the locker room after two free throws by Clough, St. Lawrence took a 33-31 lead with 16:34 to play on a pair of baskets from the charity stripe by Allison Cady. The teams exchanged baskets, with the Saints holding onto a slight lead until the 5:22 mark, when Bailei Tetrault converted a conventional three-point play to put Rensselaer on top, 51-50. St. Lawrence's Caroline Dalton recorded a layup with 1:28 left to play to tie the score at 55-55, but the Engineers followed with back-to-back jumpers from Amanda Lynch and Clough to extend the RPI lead to 59-55 with 33 seconds left to play.

Clough hit one-of-two from the free throw line with 12 seconds to go, but Dalton sank both of her attempts from the stripe three seconds later to pull the game back to within one, 60-59. The Engineers iced the game in the final seconds, as Lynch hit two free throws, followed by a single shot from the line from Lauren Young to set the final score.

Lynch also finished in double-digit scoring totals, finishing with 14 points, off 10-of-14 shooting from the free throw line, while also adding nine boards. Shaina Iton scored 12 points for the Engineers, while also totaling nine rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.

For the Saints, Kara McDuffee posted a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 18 caroms. Cady led all players with 20 points, while Dalton added 11 points for St. Lawrence. Lauren Quattrocchi handed out eight assists for the Saints.

RPI shot 38.8 percent (19-49) from the field, while holding St. Lawrence to 28.2 percent (22-78) from the floor. The Saints outrebounded the Engineers, 49-45.

The Engineers will return to action on Saturday, continuing Liberty League action, hosting RIT at 2 p.m.
