The Engineers face Route 7 rival Union on Saturday night (7:30pm) in the Third Annual Mayor's Cup at the Times Union Center. This game, the third meeting of the season between the two schools, is a non-league contest. Either Gary McCarthy, the mayor of Schenectady, or Lou Rosamilia of Troy will be presented the trophy by the Mayor of Albany Kathy Sheehan.
2014 MAYOR'S CUP
The Engineers posted a 2-1 victory in the 2014 Mayor's Cup behind
Scott Diebold's 28 saves in front of a crowd of 7,100 at the Times Union Center. Following the final whistle, the teams combined for 125 minutes in penalties and four players were disqualified. Both teams had their coaches and several student-athletes suspended due to their actions.
LAST WEEKEND
Rensselaer hosted then-No. 15 Colgate and Cornell in ECAC Hockey play and the Engineers swept the weekend, extending their win streak to three games. In a 4-1 win over Colgate on Friday, RPI got two goals from
Matt Neal, with additional tallies from
Mark McGowan and
Jacob Laliberte.
Jason Kasdorf totaled 17 saves. On Saturday, the Engineers defeated Cornell, 3-0, behind Kasdorf's 26 saves. Laliberte scored for the second straight game, while
Jake Wood and
Jared Wilson also netted goals for the Engineers.
ECAC HOCKEY HONORS
RPI's
Matt Neal and
Jason Kasdorf were named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week and Goaltender of the Week, respectively. Kasdorf made 17 saves in a 4-1 win over No. 15 Colgate on Friday and then stopped all 26 shots he faced in a 3-0 shutout of Cornell. Neal had four points on the weekend, including two goals and an assist in Friday's victory. He was a plus-4 with six shots on goal.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP
The Engineers are 3-3-0 in January and each of the top four scorers in the month are seniors, including three captains.
Jacob Laliberte has two goals and six assists in six games, while
Matt Neal has notched three goals and three assists in four contests. Defenseman
Curtis Leonard has four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in four games and
Mark McGowan has three points on two goals and a helper in four games. Leonard wears the 'C' for the Engineers, while Neal and McGowan are both alternate captains.
THIRD OF THREE
Rensselaer and Union have met twice this season with the Engineers posting victories of 6-1 (Oct. 31 in Troy) and 2-1 in overtime (Nov. 1 in Schenectady). Those were ECAC Hockey contests.
