Men's Basketball Drops 58-52 Decision to Hobart

TROY, N.Y. -- Andrew Hoy led three players in double digits with a game-high 16 points, leading Hobart to a 58-52 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League men's basketball action on Friday evening at East Campus Stadium. The Engineers fall to 5-12 on the season, with a 2-6 mark in the conference, while Hobart improves to 8-6 overall, with a 4-2 league slate.

Chase Almond (South Kingstown, RI / South Kingstown) kicked off the scoring for the Engineers, but Hobart responded and built up a six point lead, 12-6, on a jumper by Luke Ruddy (Seneca Falls, NY / Mynderse Academy) at 13:45. Josh Dugas (Monroe, CT / St. Luke's) was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three shots from the charity stripe, and followed with a layup on RPI's next possession to pull the Engineers back to within one with just under 11 minutes to play in the first half. After the Statesmen regained the lead on a Connor Rehbaum (Cheektowaga, NY / St. Joseph's Collegiate) bucket, Brian Hatcher (Danbury, CT / Immaculate) finished off a conventional three-point play to knot the score at 14-14 with 10:10 left to play. The teams battled back and forth, with Almond giving RPI a 20-19 lead on a layup at 5:19. Back-to-back baskets by Tyler Gendron (Merrimack, NH / Merrimack) tied the score at 26-26 at the halftime break.

Both teams came out firing to start the second half, and RPI built up its largest lead of the game on an Almond layup at 17:45 that put the Engineers on top, 32-28. Hobart responded with a 10-point run, capped by a layup by Trey Blanding (Cleona, PA / Annville-Cleona) at 13:30 that gave Hobart a 38-32 advantage. RPI refused to fold, and battled back to within two on a Dugas layup at the 6:00 mark, but another run pushed the Statesmen lead to 50-40 on a Ruddy free throw with 3:28 on the clock. Rensselaer was able to get within four twice, including on a Jonathan Luster (Essex, CT / Valley Regional) layup with just four seconds to go, but Hobart iced the victory with two made foul shots from Hoy (Batavia, NY / Batavia) in the last two seconds.

Ruddy added 13 points for Hobart, while Rehbaum was the other Statesman with double-digit scoring totals, as he finished with 12 points. Pete Drescher (Fayetteville, NY / Tilton School) led Hobart off the boards with nine rebounds, while also adding three steals.

Almond finished with a team-high 14 points for RPI to go along with a team-best nine boards, while Dugas chipped in with 11 points. Hatcher added nine points, eight caroms, three steals, and a block for the Engineers. Both teams shot identical 21-of-53 (39.6 percent) from the floor, while Hobart held a slight rebounding advantage, 35-32.

RPI will return to action on Saturday, traveling up Route 7 to take on Union at 4 p.m. Hobart visits Skidmore on Saturday, also at 4 p.m.
