Men's Hockey Shut Out by Miami, 3-0, in Weekend Finale

TROY, N.Y. -- Cody Murphy scored twice to lead #6 Miami to a 3-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in non-conference men's hockey action on Saturday evening at Houston Field House on Autism Awareness Night. With the loss, the Engineers fall to 6-15-1 overall, while the RedHawks improve to 14-6-0.

Murphy (Highwood, IL) scored the first goal of the game at 11:36 of the first. Anthony Louis (Winfield, IL) passed the puck from the far side of the net, finding Murphy directly in the middle of the crease, where he shot it stick side on RPI goaltender Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB / Des Moines Bucs).

The RedHawks took a 3-0 lead in the course of seven seconds in the second period. At 7:27, Austin Czarnik (Washington, MI) scored on a two-on-one, as Riley Barber (Pittsburgh, PA) carried the puck down the far side of the ice from the blue line, crossing it to Czarnik in front of the net, where he one-timed it past Kasdorf. Seven seconds later, Murphy stole the puck off the stick of an RPI defender in the near circle, and shot the puck towards the net at an angle, where it managed to find a way between the pipes.

Despite several scoring chances by both teams, the 3-0 score would hold throughout the rest of regulation.

Miami outshot RPI, 36-22, and held a 28-24 advantage in faceoff wins. Both teams were unable to capitalize on the power play, with RPI going 0-for-3, and the RedHawks going 0-for-6 on the night. Kasdorf was solid in the net, making 33 saves for the Engineers, while Miami's Jay WIlliams stopped 22 opposing shots in his fourth shutout of the season.

The Engineers will return to action on Friday, Jan. 9, returning to ECAC Hockey action, visiting Quinnipiac and Princeton in a weekend series.
