Men's Soccer Comes Back to Beat Keene State, 3-2

Engineers get two from Baughen, before Gunderson wins it

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Nathaniel Gunderson had a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Keene State College, on Thursday at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers conclude the regular season with an 11-4-3 record, while the Owls drop to 4-11.

Gunderson (Olympia, WA/Tumwater) broke a 2-2 tie in the 78th minute, firing a left-footed shot just under the crossbar from 12 yards out. Dribbling up the right side of the field, Gunderson took a touch to his left, before ripping in his fifth of the year.

The Owls jumped out to a very early lead, scoring the game's first goal in the first minute of play. From a throw-in on the right, sophomore Conor Leahy (Beverly, MA/Beverly) found classmate Riley Steele (Sutton, MA/Sutton) for his first goal of the season.

Rensselaer answered in the 22nd minute, when junior Devon Baughen (Sarasota, FL/Pine View) took down a long ball from senior Matt Carberry (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and deposited it past Keene State senior goalkeeper Jacob Walker (Chester, VT/Green Mountain) for his team-leading eighth goal of the year.

Leahy put the visitors back in front in the 38th minute, sticking home a cross from the left flank from Steele. The tally was Leahy's sixth goal of the campaign.

Baughen equalized for a second time in the 50th minute, follow a driving 50-yard run up the right flank by Gunderson. After cutting into the penalty area, Gunderson delivered a thigh-high cross back to Baughen, who finished into the left side of the net.

Rensselaer finished with a 16-9 advantage in shots, including 8-2 on goal. Walker (0-1) made five saves, while RPI sophomore keeper Ryan Nealon (Somers, NY/Somers) did not have a stop.
