Baseball Drops a Pair to Open 2015

Engineers fall at Randolph-Macon 4-3 and 8-2

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Michael Trentham had a walk-off RBI single to cap a three-run seventh inning in the first game and the Randolph-Macon baseball team swept a home doubleheader with RPI on Saturday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.

The Yellow Jackets (5-0) took the opener, 4-3, before claiming an 8-2 victory in the nightcap over the Engineers (0-2). Game 2 was called in the bottom of the eighth due to darkness.

Randolph-Macon trailed 3-1 heading to its final at-bat in Game 1. Sophomore Blake Saathoff pinch-hit to lead off the frame and was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Stuart Brown walked and junior Christian Sanderson reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Freshman Nestor Rentas pinch-ran for Brown at second. Sophomore Jordan Schmeer singled to right to plate Saathoff and Rentas, knotting the score at 3-3. One out later, Trentham singled to left to bring home Sanderson with the winning run.

RPI saw seniors Shane Matthews and Nick Palmiero each go 1 for 3 with a run scored. Classmate Jared Jensen scored a run after reaching on a pinch-hit double in the fifth.

Sophomore Nic Phelps (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K) picked up the win in relief of junior starter James Walsh (5.0 IP, 2 H, 2 UE, 2 BB, 8 K). Jensen took the loss in relief for the Engineers, allowing three runs on one hit in 0.1 innings. Sean Conroy had a no-decision as the starter, surrendering a run on four hits in 5.2 innings. 

The Yellow Jackets broke a 1-1 tie with two in the fifth and plated three in the sixth and two in the eighth to record the 8-2 victory in Game 2. Freshman Rick Spiers recorded his second win, going five innings with five hits, one unearned run, one walk and seven strikeouts.

Junior Nick Maiolo went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Sanderson had a pair of doubles and drove in two. Junior Greg Echeverria was saddled with the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Palmiero and junior Nick Annunziata eached turned in 2 for 4 games. Sean Welling (1 for 4) drove in a run with a double, while senior captain Tyler Listing had a run-scoring single in three trips.

Randolph-Macon has canceled its Monday meeting with RPI due to expected frigid temperatures. The Yellow Jackets return to the field on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. at Christopher Newport. Rensselaer visits Virginia Wesleyan on Friday (12pm).
