Game HighlightsTROY, N.Y. – Taylor Mahoney scored a goal and added an assist to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 5-3 win over Colgate in ECAC Hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Houston Field House. The Engineers wrap up the season at 7-23-4 overall, with a 5-16-1 mark in ECAC Hockey play, while the Raiders stand at 7-25-3 overall and 4-16-2 in conference play. RPI got on the board first, as
Hannah Behounek (Minnetonka, MN / Minnetonka) scored her third goal of the season at 2:53 of the first period. The Engineers were passing around the net, and the puck went from left to right from
Ali Svoboda (Arlington Heights, IL / Chicago Mission) to Mahoney (Cary, IL / Chicago Mission). Mahoney found a waiting Behounek in front of the Colgate net, and she put it stick side on Brittney Brooks (Las Vegas, NV / Colorado Select).
The Engineers killed off a penalty later in the period, and immediately went on the power play, as Colgate was called for an infraction as the RPI penalty expired. Rensselaer immediately took advantage, winning the ensuing faceoff, and getting a goal from
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH / Assabet Valley) at 12:18. She was assisted by
Kathryn Schilter (Aurora, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) on the tally.
Five minutes into the second period, the Engineers struck again on a power play, as Mahoney scored her fifth goal of the season.
Whitney Renn (Troy, MI / Little Caesars) passed the puck ahead to a streaking Mahoney in the far circle, and Mahoney shot past Brooks just inside the near pipe. RPI increased its lead to 4-0 at 7:26, as Svoboda netted a goal just after the Engineers went back to full strength. Renn again handed out an assist, passing from the near circle to Svoboda, who smacked a hard shot past Brooks from the high slot.
After RPI was called for a five minute major on a cross-check, Colgate was able to capitalize. Miriam Drubel (Hanover, NH / NAHA) took assists from Taylor Craig (Mattapoisett, MA / Tabor Academy) and Katie Case (Grosse Point Shores, MI / Bluewater Hawks) at 11:04, as she shot glove side on
Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI / Madison Capitals). The Raiders cut their deficit to 4-2 and then pulled within 4-3 on back-to-back power play goals by Melissa Keuber (St. Albert, AB / St. Albert Slash).
At 13:38, Colgate won a faceoff, and Breanne Wilson-Bennett (Markham, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) took a shot that rebounded back to Keuber, who scored on the follow up. The pair struck again just under a minute later (14:31) as Colgate once again came away with a faceoff win and Keuber's shot slipped past O'Brien. Lauren Wildfang (Waterdown, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) picked up with secondary assist on Keuber's first goal, while Shelby Perry (Elginburg, ON / Kingston Ice Wolves) was credited with a helper on the second tally.
The Engineers pushed their lead back to two goals early in the third period. On a 5-on-3 power play opportunity, Alexa Grushow (Mechanicsburg, PA / Washington Pride) scored after a scrum in front of the Colgate net. Tomlinson and Schilter picked up assists on the goal.
With just over three minutes to go, Colgate pulled the goaltender in favor of an extra skater, and had a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 1:47 after an RPI penalty. The Raiders controlled action and took several shots, but O'Brien came up with big saves, and the Engineers defense held on for the win.
Colgate outshot RPI, 37-26, and held a 28-22 advantage in faceoff wins. O'Brien recorded 34 saves between the pipes for the Engineers. Brooks took the loss for Colgate, making 13 saves in just over 30 minutes of action. She was relieved by Susan Allen (Rochester, NY / Rochester Edge) in the second period. Allen stopped eight shots.
