THE ENGINEERS• RPI kicked off the 2015 season against #16 Montclair State on Sunday.
Breanainn McNeally and
Pat Hogan both scored two goals, while
Scott Crow finished with one goal and one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper
David Gibbs recorded nine saves in his first collegiate start.
• RPI had tied the game at 8-8 with two minutes left on a goal by Scott Crow (Darnestown, MD / Bullis School), and Ben Piersiak (Needham, MA / St. Sebastians) won the ensuing faceoff to give the Engineers a chance at the win. The Red Hawks blocked an RPI shot, but Matthew Gilman (St. Louis, MO / John Burroughs) picked up the ground ball to keep possession for the Engineers. Montclair State's Michael Schreck (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) then caused a turnover, picking off an RPI pass, and streaked to the offensive end, where he found Mangan (Maplewood, NJ / Columbia) on the far side of the crease. Mangan's hard shot beat goalkeeper David Gibbs (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) for the winning goal.• McNeally was named the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Week, while Gibbs picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors. Freshman
Matthew Gilman, who also recorded one goal and one assist, was named the League's Rookie of the Week.
• The 2014 Engineers went 11-5 overall with a 4-2 Liberty League slate and Townsend earned his fourth Liberty League Coaching of the Year award for his efforts. He guided a balanced Engineers team that was second in the league in goals-against average (7.44), while also ranking second in points per game (18.88), goals per game (11.31) and assists per game (7.56). The team had a 90% conversion rate in man-down situations, which was the best in the entire nation and also the highest percentage in school history. The Engineers, who participated in the Liberty League Semifinals, converted 36 of 40 opportunities.
• Longstick midfielder
John Phillips was a Preseason All-American, and later earned All-ECAC First Team, All-Liberty League First Team and USILA National All-America Honorable Mention honors. Joining Phillips on the All-League First Team were freshmen Breaniann McNeally and
Matt Hall, along with senior
Thomas Newman. Faceoff specialist
T.J. Tynan earned All-League Second Team honors, and was joined by
Zach Moro and
Patrick Finn, while
Alex Castronovo and
Pat Hogan were tabbed as Honorable Mention selections.
• Newman was also a USILA National All-American Honorable Mention, while joining Phillips and Castronovo as USILA Scholar All-Americans. McNeally was the RPI athletic department Male Freshman Athlete of the Year.
THE CARDINALS• Plattsburgh State kicks off the 2015 season today against the Engineers. The Cardinals went 13-6 last season, falling in the SUNYAC Championship to #8 Cortland.
• Current junior Brendan Damm Was named a USILA All-American Honorable Mention after leading the SUNYAC with 51 goals and 68 points. In just two seasons with the Cardinals, Damm has ammassed 91 goals and 126 points.
• Plattsburgh State is led by fourth-year head coach Mike Schambach. In his three seasons at the helm, Schambach has guided the Cardinals to a 38-17 record. He was named the SUNYAC Coach of the Year in 2013.
