CLERMONT, Fla. - Emilie Klein scored with just 11 seconds left in regulation to lift the third-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this morning in non-league play. With the win, the Mules improve to 7-1, while the Engineers drop to 2-3.
Klein's (North Andover, MA/Brooks School) second goal of the half, which proved to be the game-winner, came 1:19 after RPI junior
Erin DeLucca (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) tied the game at 8-8.
The Engineers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, 14:32 into the first half. Sophomore
Sophie Hager (Northport, NY/Northport) got the scoring started 3:36 into the opening stanza. Less than four minutes later, senior
Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT/Windsor) made it 2-0. Junior
Mackenzie O'Neil (Duxbury, MA/Milton Academy) then took a feed from graduate student
Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI/LaSalle Academy) to bag her fifth of the year. DeLucca netted her first of the game from senior
Erin Riley (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South).
Both teams then traded goals over the final 12:32 of the first half, with the Mules tallying 2:07 before the break to make it 6-3 at halftime.
Colby picked up its play at the offensive end in the second stanza, scoring six of the first seven goals. Junior Abby Hooper (Nahant, MA/Brooks School) had two of those markers, including one that put the Mules up 8-7, with 6:41 remaining.
Six different Engineers recorded points, including Colitz and DeLucca, who had two goals and an assist each. Senior netminder
Erin Amarello (Griswold, CT/Bernard School) made four saves, while Colby senior goalie Claire Dickson (Darien, CT/Darien) finished with five at the other end of the field.
RPI returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Skidmore for its Liberty League opener (1pm). Colby will take on RIT on Tuesday (11am) in Florida.
