WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Senior
Sean Conroy threw a nine-inning complete game to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to an 11-1 win, following a 9-5 loss to Union College in a doubleheader on Saturday. With the split, the Engineers are 7-7 overall (6-2 Liberty League), while the Dutchmen move to 6-5 (2-2 Liberty League).
Conroy (1-1) allowed just one run on five hits and two walks. He struck out five, while going the distance for the first time this season and ninth time in his career.
RPI got a first inning on an RBI-single by
Nick Palmiero. Conroy and Union starter Andy Labeck then kept the bats at bay until the top of the sixth, when the Engineers doubled their lead on a Dutchmen error.
Senior
Tim LeSuer opened up a three seventh with a run-scoring single. Sophomore
Thomas Desmond followed with a sacrifice fly, before junior
Nick Annunziata plated LeSuer with a single.
The Engineers put up six runs in the top of the ninth to take an 11-0 lead. Senior
Jared Jensen highlighted the rally with a two-run double. Union got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring fielder's choice by Jamie Faber.
Sophomore Adam Ashenfarb picked up his second win of the season in game one, working 6.0 innings. He allowed five runs (3 earned) on six hits. He struck out four and walked just one.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Union answered with a Jaime Faber RBI-single to bring in Jake Fishman. The Dutchmen would make it 4-1 in the third with a Kent Curran RBI groundout and Andy Labeck followed later in the innings with a two run single.
After the Engineers make it 4-2 in the top of the 4th, Union followed with two of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Curran picked up another RBI groundout in the innings and Jeffery Grasso Jr. drove in Curran with a single to left.
The Dutchmen scored three more times in the fifth inning on a two-run double from Curran and an RBI-single from Faber.
RPI added single runs in the sixth and seventh and brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the 7th. However, freshman Bill Christopher worked out of the bases-loaded jam to seal the victory and earn his second save of the season.
The Engineers are back in action on Friday, when they visit Vassar College for a doubleheader (1pm). Union travels to Bard College on Friday (1pm).
