With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-2 overall, while the Red Dragons drop to 2-2.Oneonta got on the board first, as Mike Metzger scored an unassisted tally with 12:14 to play in the first. Rensselaer tied the game on a goal by
Patrick Finn, who was assisted by McNeally, and then took the lead with 5:49 to go in the first, as Finn assisted
Billy Gibbs on his first goal of the year. The Red Dragons tied the game at 2-2 39 seconds later on a score by Connor Coyle, but the Engineers would hold a 3-2 advantage at the end of the period after Gilman took a helper from Finn on a man-up goal with 1:12 left to play.
RPI doubled up Oneonta on McNeally's first goal of the day, a man-up tally at 10:31 of the second, with the assist going to Gilman. The Red Dragons would mount one last attack, tying the game at 4-4 with back-to-back goals by Charles Montgomery and Devon Casey with 5:13 to play in the first half. The Engineers responded with two tallies of their own to end the first half, with
Aaron Shavel scoring at 4:16, before
Jake Weidner put RPI up at 6-4 with 1:34 to go. McNeally notched his second helper of the day on Weidner's goal.
Rensslear scored three times in just over a minute in the third quarter to take a 9-4 advantage.
Matt Hall scored his sixth goal of the season at 4:56, while Gilman took an assist from
Scott Crow at 4:47 to push the Engineer lead to 8-4.
Chaz Bell scored his first goal of the season at 3:24 to round out the scoring for the quarter.
The Engineers wrapped up the game with two goals in the fourth. McNeally scored his second of the day, and 14th of the season, on a man-up opportunity, with the assist going to Gilman. Weidner aded his second with 5:16 left on the clock to set the final score.
RPI outshot Oneonta, 38-27, and won 13-of-20 faceoffs in the game. Both teams picked up 26 groundballs in the game. The Engineers were 3-for-7 on the extra man, while holding the Red Dragons to 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
David Gibbs recorded 14 saves in goal for Rensselaer in the win. Ryan Adler took the loss, stopping 17 opposing shots for Oneonta.
RPI returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Connecticut College at 4pm at East Campus Stadium. Oneonta also plays on Wednesday, taking on Nazareth College in Bradenton, Fla.
