Rensselaer and Clarkson meet in the decisive third game of this best-of-three ECAC Hockey First Round series following Saturday night's 5-0 win by the Golden Knights. RPI, the eighth-seed, defeated ninth-seeded Clarkson, 3-2, on Friday night. The winner of tonight's game advances to play second-seeded St. Lawrence in a best-of-three quarterfinal next weekend. The loser's season is over.
GAME THREES
This season marks the seventh straight year the Engineers have gone to a decisive third game in a league playoff series. RPI is 1-5 in such games, including 1-3 in first round contests. The lone victory came at Clarkson, 4-1 in 2012. In seven all-time game threes in the current ECAC Hockey format, Rensselaer is 1-6. It is 1-3 in the first round (1-0 on the road) and 0-3 in quarterfinals (0-2 on the road).
ALL-TIME VS. CLARKSON IN THE POST-SEASON
RPI has played Clarkson in 12 playoff games, winning seven of them, including three in Potsdam. One of those victories came in a decisive Game 3, 4-1 in 2012. Six current Rensselaer skaters played in that game, including
Zach Schroeder, who had an assist. The Engineers and Knights have played once on March 8, a 6-4 Clarkson victory in 1986 in Troy.
RENSSELAER VS. CLARKSON IN 2014-15
In the four games between the Engineers and the Golden Knights, Clarkson has outscored RPI, 3.8 to 2.0 per game, with an advantage of shots as well, 34.8 to 21.2. Both teams have scored four goals in the first period, while Clarkson has outscored Rensselaer in the second (7-2) and third (4-2) periods. The Knights are 3 for 15 (20.0%) on the power play, while the Engineers are 0 for 8.
LAST NIGHT
Sophomore Steve Perry stopped all 24 shots he faced, senior Joe Zarbo had two goals and four other Golden Knights had multiple points as Clarkson defeated Rensselaer, 5-0. The Knights scored within the first two minutes of each period, including just 1:26 into the contest. RPI junior
Jason Kasdorf stopped 24 shots in 40:26 before being relieved by senior
Scott Diebold (3 saves).
FRIDAY NIGHT

Milos Bubela scored twice and classmate
Jason Kasdorf made 36 saves to backstop a 3-2 win as Rensselaer took a 1-0 lead in the series. Clarkson broke out on top in the second period, but Bubela tied the game five minutes later. RPI took the lead on an early third period goal by Massena, N.Y., native
Mark Miller and Bubela tallied 15 minutes later for a 3-1 lead. The Golden Knights pulled to within a goal with 11 seconds left. Kasdorf had 12 saves in each period, while Greg Lewis stopped 14 shots for Clarkson.
