Baseball Completes Series Sweep

Engineers top Bard by scores of 4-3 and 13-0

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Senior Jared Jensen hit his team-leading fourth home run and classmate Sean Conroy threw a complete-game shutout to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Bard College at Honey Field. With wins of 4-3 and 13-0, the Engineers improve to 14-8 overall and 13-3 in Liberty League play. The Raptors drop to 3-20 and 1-15.

A pitchers' duel early in game one, Bard broke the deadlock with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.

The Engineers didn't score until the top of the sixth, when senior Nick Palmiero doubled-home classmate Tim LeSuer. Sophomore Thomas Desmond followed with an RBI-single to give RPI the lead for good. A double-steal by sophomore Justin Valente and senior Shane Matthews produced a run in the top of the seventh, before LeSuer drove in what turned out to be the winning run with a base-hit later that inning.

Bard mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, which chased RPI starting pitcher Charles Parslow, but junior Stephen Schiavone was able to come on for the final two out for the save.

Game two saw the Engineers score two in the first and six in the third to take an early 8-0 lead. LeSuer got things going with a sacrifice fly, before Desmond singled in Palmiero.

RPI rapped out six hits, including an RBI-single off the bat of Jensen to blow the game open in the third. Junior Chris Holomakoff capped the rally with a double to left center that brought home sophomore Sam Lawrence.

Conroy allowed just four hits over 9.0 innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. He struck out a career-high 16 and walked just two. Jensen was a double shy of the cycle in game two, going 4 for 5 with a triple, a home run, three runs and two runs batted in. Desmond was 2 for 5 with a double, two runs and two RBI, while Lawrence finished 3 for 4 with a double, a run and two RBI.

The Engineers are back on the diamond on Wednesday, when they host Williams College (4pm). Bard hosts Southern Vermont on Thursday (4pm).
